Our National Spiritual Director, the Rev Michael Bolley, was delighted to be present in St Edmundsbury Cathedral on Saturday 25th July, the feast of St James the Apostle, when the local Cursillo community gathered for their annual Diocesan Cursillo Eucharist, During the service the Rev Phillip Allison was commissioned as the new Diocesan Spiritual Director in succession to the Rev Penny Brinkley.
Michael spoke briefly about the role of clergy in Cursillo, picking up on the words of Andoni Iraola, the new head coach of Liverpool FC, who when talking about his approach to the role had stated, “Coaches just assist … it’s players that matter.” Michael suggested that Cursillo sees the role of clergy in a similar light – they are the coaches who provide spiritual counsel, pastoral care and the ministry of word and sacrament, with the sole aim of enabling the people of God, the laity, to live out their faith in daily life. The clergy are not there to direct, but to support, advise and encourage. Ultreya!
